Board of Directors

Steven B. Warren (Board Director) received his master's of social science work from Columbia School of Social Work and Social Administration in 1986. He served as the Services for the Underserved Executive Director until 2001, when he was disabled with porphyria caused by agent orange poisoning during his two tours of Vietnam.

In addition to being responsible for the overall management of SUS, he helped to spearhead Managed Care Innovations, Inc., a consortium of 13 mental health care institutions. Prior to his appointment as SUS' Executive Director, Mr. Warren was employed at the Project Return Foundation as a Program Planner. He has served as the New York City Regional Director of the Association for Community Living (formerly ACHAIMH) and as president of this statewide residential mental health provider organization. Appointed by Governor Cuomo to the New York State Mental Health Services Council, he served two terms from 1996-1998.

Steven lives in Babylon, NY with his wife Nancy and has two children.


Valerie Reyes-Jimenez (Member) is a National AIDS activist and spokesperson. Valerie served on President Clinton's Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS and is a recognized expert and advocate in the field. She applies her skills and experiences obtained over the years to enhance the lives of others like herself who are living with HIV and AIDS; particularly in the fields of homelessness, addiction, public benefits and event organizing. As well as providing direct representation, planning and consulting services in the areas of advocacy, public policy, grassroots organizing and lobbying. Ms. Jimenez has worked closely with HASA and is well known by our other major funders. Ms. Jimenez was our Keynote Speaker at the Praxis AIDS Day which drew a large number of participants. Valerie will be extremely helpful as a client representative on the Board and as an advocate for our Clients in New York.


ShaKing Alston (Member) is Vice President, Metro New York Initiatives for The Council of Community Services of New York State, Inc (CCSNYS), a statewide membership association that provides a broad range of services to its membership including training, technical assistance, fiscal and legal services, group purchasing and insurance. The CCSNYS is headquartered in Albany, and has offices in New York City, Buffalo, Poughkeepsie and Oneonta.

Prior to CCSNYS, ShaKing was the Executive Director of the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYCEJA), where he lead a citywide network of grassroots organizations that sought to advance the quality of life in their neighborhoods campaigns to promote Brownfields redevelopment, inaugural participation in the NYC Apollo Alliance, siting of solid waste facilities. NYCEJA also lead campaigns to promote increased access to open space in these communities.

ShaKing also has a wealth of experience with nonprofits in diverse communities throughout Boston and Lowell, Massachusetts. He has worked for the National Parks Conservation Association and was the former executive director of the Boston based Environmental Diversity Forum, a New England wide organization which promoted diversity in the environmental organizations. ShaKing was also a health and safety trainer for the New England Consortium based at University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Mr. Alston sits on the board of several organizations in New York City.


Sabrina Prince (Member) brings to the Board over ten years of diverse healthcare marketing experience, ranging from clinical research to public relations, and advertising. Sabrina has also co-authored scientific papers and abstracts related to Alzheimer's or seizure disorders during tenure at the Cornell University Medical College, Department of Neurobiology and has launched various disease awareness campaigns including: Fighting HIV through R&B - a nationwide HIV/AIDS testing program - in 2002 and Diabetes Aware, national diabetes campaign featuring celebrity ambassadors such as Halle Berry, Kevin Kline, Cuba Gooding and Jon Lovitz.

Sabrina currently works as a VP, Account Director at Saatchi & Saatchi Healthcare Advertising in NY, where she leads new business and client efforts for companies including: Astra Zeneca, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Novo Nordisk. Sabrina holds a BA in Neuroscience & Behavior from Wesleyan University. When she is not busy working, Sabrina enjoys creating culinary delights for friends at her home in Jamaica, Queens.


Dale Burnett (Member) is a Wall Street executive who has advised and held positions at some of the Country's top financial institutions including Ernst & Young LLP, The Blackstone Group and Merrill Lynch. Currently, he is an investment principal in AIG Investments Global Real Estate private equity practice where he evaluates, structures and executes investments in commercial real estate acquisitions, development and joint-ventures in the United States, Eastern Europe and Russia.


Mark Gustin (Member) is certified in healthcare management and is a certified behavioral healthcare executive. He served as a healthcare management executive at Kings County Hospital Center from 1979 until his retirement in 2008.

During his tenure at the hospital, he was administratively responsible for a number of programs and services. Much earlier in his career, Mark was a practicing public accountant.

Mark serves as a board member of two nonprofit organizations, one of which he was board chair. He is an active and participating member of board committees such as: board development, finance, and resource development.

In addition, Mark is a member of the Board of Visitors, Long Island Developmental Disabilities Services Office. He is also a panel member for the Surrogate Decision Making Program, State of New York Commission on Quality of Care for the Mentally Disabled.

Mark has an interest in board governance and has successfully completed numerous board training workshops and a board development program of the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute, United Way of New York City. He was the recipient of the Mental Health Association in New York State's "Caroline Cash Award" twice. His biography was selected for inclusion in Marquis Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.

Mr. Gustin completed a post graduate managed care practicum and a post graduate residency in hospital administration from Kings County Hospital Center.
